The town of Irmo, SC, stretches across Lexington and Richland Counties, about 12 miles northwest of Columbia along Interstate 26. Irmo covers a land area of 6.3 square miles just east of Lake Murray, home to a population of more than 12,000 people.
Irmo was chartered in 1890 just after the opening of the local railroad. The new town’s title came from combining the names of Captain C.J. Iredell and Henry Moseley, two important local founding figures. Despite its growth over the years, Irmo has no actual downtown but rather several suburban neighborhoods plus the Columbiana Centre shopping area. The Okra Strut has been held every year since 1973. This popular festival includes a charity golf tournament, live entertainment, cycling and running competitions, arts and crafts exhibits, and a parade.
