As the capital city of South Carolina, Columbia also serves as the seat of Richland County. It covers a large land area of more than 132 square miles, home to a population of roughly 135,000 people.
Named for Christopher Columbus, Columbia received its first charter as a town in 1805, then later became a city in 1854. It’s situated at the merging point of the Saluda and Broad rivers, operating under the Latin motto that translates to “Justice, the Queen of Virtues.” Columbia today houses the main campus of the University of South Carolina, the state’s largest university, as well as Fort Jackson, the biggest U.S. Army installation for basic combat training. Finlay Park covers 18 acres and hosts such annual events as Kids Day and The Summer Concert Series.
