How Often Do You Need to Change Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic Oil

You may have heard of synthetic oil before but you may not be sure exactly what it is and whether it's something you should consider for your car. Oil changes are required maintenance if you want your vehicle to run efficiently and are a relatively cheap investment to prolong the life of your vehicle. But you may be wondering how often do you need to change synthetic oil versus conventional oil?

The debate between Synthetic oil and Conventional oil

Synthetic oil is an engine lubricant created artificially from chemical compounds. Some classes of synthetic oil start with conventional oil as a base that's then chemically altered, while others may be artificially created from other raw materials. In contrast, conventional motor oil (also referred to as standard oil or mineral-based oil), is refined from naturally occurring crude oil.

The primary purposes of synthetic oil are to reduce engine wear during cold start-ups and drive-away and to avoid or reduce oil deterioration. Synthetic oil is thinner than conventional oil, resists temperature extremes better, and generally lasts longer. Even though you likely won't notice any difference in how your car performs the durability characteristic translates to less frequent oil changes.

So, how often do you need to change synthetic oil? About 7,500 miles between changes is recommended, compared to 3,000 to 5,000 for conventional oil changes. Some vehicle manufacturers actually recommend 15,000-mile intervals (or one year) between oil changes for synthetic oil. Be sure to read your owner's manual or ask your mechanic for professional advice as to how often do you need to change synthetic oil.

Even though synthetic oil changes are more expensive than conventional oil changes, they can actually save you money in the long run because you're not paying for the labor or the oil filter as often. You can also take advantage of the oil change coupons offered by your auto shop.

Remember: Regardless of whether you use conventional motor oil or synthetic, regular oil changes can help ensure long life and protect the investment you have made in your car.
