Do You Really Need to Change Transmission Fluid?

Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid is the lubricant for all of the moving parts inside your transmission. In an automatic transmission, this fluid also serves as a coolant and a viscous fluid that transmits power from the engine to the transmission. Without transmission fluid, your vehicle will experience shifting problems, overheating, parts wearing out, and eventually stop working altogether!

The transmission system is constantly exposed to both heat and stress. Thus, a conscientious vehicle owner will make sure to have frequent transmission service, which typically includes a transmission fluid change. This is why:

• Shifting Problems: It may become hard to shift into gear or there could also be a random popping out of gear. This is a dangerous problem that could potentially result in an accident because the driver has basically lost control of the vehicle.

• Worn-out parts: If the components of the transmission system start to wear out, you may find yourself forcing the shifter into the next year, causing your vehicle to lurch or jerk while shifting. Ask your mechanic to keep an eye on the various parts of the system that may start to wear out.

• Major transmission repair: It is much cheaper to keep up with the recommended transmission service intervals rather than wait for a major repair issue, such as a transmission replacement or rebuild. The cost of a transmission fluid change is minimal in comparison.

The typical transmission service interval is 60,000 to 100,000 miles, but don't forget to check the transmission fluid level between service intervals. Letting your car run low on transmission fluid can harm the internal parts of your transmission, which will not be properly lubricated. Unfortunately, you may not hear any noises or have other clues that your transmission is low on fluid until it's too late.
