The unincorporated community of Ballantine, SC, covers 2.2 square miles of land, ranking as one of the wealthiest areas in the state. This includes the neighborhood of Lake Murray of Richland, altogether known as “The Gateway To Lake Murray,” home to a population of about 2,500 people.
The town sprang up around the railroad in the late 19th century, named for Alan Ballentine who moved his family to this rural farming area in the 1850s. In recent years, Ballantine began the process of becoming incorporated, partially driven by encroachment from nearby Irmo. However, the vote for incorporation failed. Meanwhile, Ballantine has continued to see significant growth thanks to its lakefront location and proximity to Columbia via Interstate 26. The John Jacob Calhoun Koon Farmstead is a local attraction listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
